Overview
Gedara means “home” in Sinhala. It is a household app for the everyday work of running a home: tasks, shopping and spending, organised around one household and the people in it. Data lives on the device by default, and the core works without an internet connection.
Challenge
Household apps tend to turn into spreadsheets or chore charts. Gedara is meant for families, including people who don't consider themselves good with technology, so every screen has to work without a tutorial, in English or Sinhala, and offline.
Direction
Offline-first, with large touch targets, plain language and readable text chosen over density. The app is built one phase at a time, and each phase closes with an accessibility pass and tests across domain, database, providers and widgets.
What was built
- Household and family member management
- Tasks with assignment, priorities, due dates and a recurring engine that keeps completion history
- Multiple shopping lists with duplicate detection, quantities and estimated cost
- Expenses held in exact minor units, with recurring schedules and category and payer breakdowns
- A home screen that works as a daily overview
- English and Sinhala, light and dark themes
- Accessibility passes for screen readers, touch targets, contrast and large text
Technology
- Flutter
- Dart
- Riverpod
- go_router
- Drift (SQLite)
Outcome
Five phases are complete — foundation, household, tasks, shopping and expenses — along with a full interface redesign. Bills, documents and household assets come next.
Technical notes
Money is never a double
Amounts are stored in minor units, and the parser never silently rounds or zeroes invalid input.
